Top Door Problems In Winter

Everyone living in the UK knows that the temperature drops and the weather changes in the winter months. Snow is always reportedly around the corner every year. This means we all put extra layers on and turn up the heating in our homes. But what does it mean for our front doors? In this blog post we look at the top door problems many homeowners experience in the colder weather of winter.

It is important to note that wooden doors are most prone to experiencing door problems in the winter months. This is because wood is known to expand and contract with temperature and humidity.

Sticking Doors:
If you have a wooden door, we recommend that you tighten any hinges or replace old screws before the colder weather comes. This will help reduce the risk of your doors warping or getting stuck.

Drafty Doors:
If you have large gaps under your wooden door, install a sweep. This will help to keep the warmth in and stop the cold breeze getting in. Look out for large gaps under the door. Filling these with a sweep will help keep the warmth in.

Mouldy Doors:
The moisture on a wooden door can lead to mould. A short-term fix is to scrape the mould off. This can be done with a mould remover spray or a mixture of bleach and water. In the long-term you will need to make sure that the door and the area around it is well ventilated. This will help to reduce the risk of mould.

Frozen Door Locks:
The cold and wet winter weather can lead to water getting into keyholes. The cold weather can then lead to the water freezing within the keyhole. You can breathe warm air on the lock. A hairdryer is a great way of melting the frozen lock, if you have one to hand. Do not use hot water to try and melt the frozen water as this can lead to moisture getting trapped and damaging the door.
